Chapter Twenty Three

Leon

As the days crawled by, S.A. crept to the back of my mind where she belonged. There was so much going on around here I couldn’t think straight. Doyle returned from El Paso after questioning the packers who still kept to their story. The cargo arrived from Mexico, they stashed it inside old furniture and when the truck arrived they loaded it on board. The driver was the same guy it always was, Forrester. It all ran smoothly as far as they were concerned.

That left Forrester. Isaac sent me and Tweedledum and Tweedledee to his house only to find his distraught wife freaking out over her missing husband. She said he left just after he got back from El Paso and she hadn’t heard from him since. At least we now knew who the traitor was. What we weren’t sure of was who he was working for. There were many factions who’d love to intervene in our operation. The worse part of it all was they got all the fucking ice for free.

I met Peacock down the same dark alleyway where I met him last time. The homeless guy was still there living in his box but I was pleased to see he’d got himself some new clothes, courtesy of me. A guy like that wouldn’t survive the winter without warm, dry clothes and hardy meals. As far as I was concerned he deserved a good life just like anyone else.

Peacock was leaning against the wall in his trench coat smoking a cigarette, twitching and shaking like a hare. It brought me great pleasure to make him nervous, plus I was in a bad mood so it wasn’t his lucky day.

“Spill,” I said to the weedy fucker.

He shrugged. “I still haven’t found your bike. I told you Lyncher sold it on EBay months ago and he’s dead now, so the trail went dead. I’m sorry, Leon.”

“That’s not why I’m here. We lost a truck load of cargo. Do you and your scum buddies know anything about that?”

He shrugged his narrow bony shoulders. “No one has said anything to me about it. So...you think Luciano took it?”

“Why else would I be talking to you?”

“Yeah...well, like I said, I know nothing.”

“What about the New Yorkers? What’s going on with them? Have they set up camp in Chicago yet?”

“In the process of doing that.”

The Lucianos teaming up with the New Yorkers made me nervous. What concerned me even more was Isaac’s lackadaisical attitude about it. He was eager to keep the peace, but at what price?

“And Pearl Cusack?”

“Holding the fort in New York I suspect, so sent guys in her place. It’s a rare thing to see Pearl Cusack. They say she’s a recluse and rarely leaves her penthouse, communicating with only a couple of her closest allies who then pass the instructions to guys who do the dirty work. That’s what I was told, anyway.”

“So, how do I get a meeting with a New Yorker?” I asked him.

“You don’t.”

“You can’t arrange it?”

He squirmed.
